Transcription is the process of converting human speech into written, typewritten or printed form. It can be performed using an audio file or a video file with sound. The outcome usually depends on the quality of the source file – the more background noise for instance, the more difficult the transcriber's job. Sometimes guesswork needs to be performed, with proper names for instance, and it is the transcriber's responsibility to flag up the things he is unsure of, so that the client is aware of potential inconsistencies. Additional services, such as time-coding, may be performed, according to the client's needs.
